What made you pick baseball as a sport? How old were you at the time?
What made me pick baseball was my natural talent and love for the game. I tried my hand at a variety of sports but baseball is the one that stuck. I was around 6 or 7 years old when I started playing.
What did your parents think about the decision? How about your friends?
My parents and friends were fully supportive of me playing baseball. They wanted me to follow what I was best at and that was baseball. A lot of my friends also played baseball so naturally we wanted each other to do well.
What was it like playing a predominantly white sport? What was the hardest thing about that, and how did you deal with it?
I realized that I was different from a lot of the other players but I never let that difference impact my drive or my passion for the sport. The hardest thing about playing a sport where you might not be the same ethnicity/religion as others is that you feel misunderstood. It took me time to realize that not a lot of people knew what a Sikh was, so to change my reaction from anger to understanding was key.
What do you feel like your greatest accomplishment is?
My greatest accomplishment is being someone my friends, family, and I can be proud of. I try to live life making conscious choices and actions so that I can look back and take pride in my decisions. To me, that is what I find most important and hardest to achieve.
What suggestions/advice do you have for any other young Sikh athletes who are thinking about participating in sports?
Don't let appearances stop you from trying to pursue something that you are interested in. Take questions about your religion with an open mind and instead of responding negatively, Use it as a chance to educate others about Sikhi.
How important was it that Boston College embraced your faith and let you play with a turban on?
It was the most important factor. Being comfortable in the Boston College environment has allowed me to grow into the person I am today.
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
